Low Resin – A Way To Lighter Rods

Modern fishing rods are often called carbon rods as opposed to glass fibre rods. It has its justification insofar as carbon fibres have a special place among the materials used to produce such a rod. However, strictly speaking a rod is made of carbon fibre-reinforced polymer, not of plain carbon fibre. By combining carbon fibre with a resin system, one gets a composite that is usable as rod making material. It is only natural that the quality and the quantity of the resin in question have a significant influence on rod action and other rod properties.

There is good reason to assume that the weight of a fishing rod should be as low as it is possible to achieve without impairing other essential characteristics like action, strength or durability. As to the action, it is in most cases greatly improved by disposing of any excessive blank weight. And to reduce the weight we shall first and foremost lower the resin content in the composite.

In practice, it means that we must choose so-called low resin prepregs, i.e. carbon fibre cloth pre-impregnated with a minimum quantity of a special resin. Low resin content results in lighter, stiffer and faster rod blanks. So far so good. Unfortunately, the use of low resin prepregs requires a precision controlled production process and special technologies. For instance, the wrapping that binds the prepreg tight to the mandrel, controls the pressure during the cure in the oven and excludes air, must be extremely tight and requires therefore the use of a micro pitch tape. And so on and so forth. That’s why it is absolutely essential to place the order for rod manufacturing with a modern factory having the respective know-how. Maybe it all seems a little complicated but the resulting advantages are certainly worth the effort.

A modern fishing rod has to meet many varied demands. As has already been said, low weight alone is not enough, high strength and durability are also necessary. Here we have a certain contradiction inherent to composite materials. The higher the carbon fibre modulus and the lower the resin content, the lighter the rods and the lower their strength. In other words, to achieve lightness and strength by changing the carbon fibre modulus and the resin content of a prepreg, one has to move in diametrically opposite directions.

Luckily, there are other means of raising rod strength. A proven method of blank reinforcement is to manipulate with fibre orientation. Standard prepregs used in fishing rods feature fibres oriented in one direction. A woven carbon fabric contains fibres oriented in at least two directions and interwoven. Due to its inherent all-around toughness and durability and its impact strength, woven carbon is a long-time favorite of aerospace, auto racing, and bicycle industries but is rather on the heavy side as a rod making material. The answer here would be to combine a light unidirectional high modulus carbon fabric with a high-grade woven carbon cloth. There is however an even better solution. We leave the woven carbon alone and employ the new X-Torque technology. Using cross-wrapped carbon layers, X-Torque eliminates blank twist, increases the power, strength and durability of a rod and significantly improves its sensitivity.

By use of premium low resin content prepregs and the amazing X-Torque technology, we are able to design very light and at the same time very tough blanks ideally suited for perfect spinning and casting rods.
